Wind Energy Storages - Possibilities

Abstract: The volatility of wind power can cause large problems for power systems operation. To remedy the disadvantages of wind power generation different storage technologies can be applied. In this paper technical and economical analysis of possible wind energy storages has been made. According to technical parameters the applicable technologies have been selected. Afterwards, for selected storages economical analyses which take into account different scenarios of investment and electricity prices have been made. Obt… Show more

“…There are no emissions, only water is the byproduct of this transformation. The energy density is good as well, but the efficiency with the current FC technology is quite low with respect to the others and the costs remain too high [10]. Table I reports specific costs, s/kW, of commercial alkaline electrolysers.…”

“…Storage technologies and their ability to create actual value in terms of production cost reductions have been analyzed in various ways, [9], [10], [11] and [12]. The outcome of such an analysis depends on a large number of parameters and assumptions.…”

“…In order to determine, which storage technologies that are most relevant in connection to wind power the required power-and energy levels of storage must be determined. The aim of using energy storage is to improve the overall quality of wind energy, but the actual improvement will always be subject to an objective judgment.Storage technologies and their ability to create actual value in terms of production cost reductions have been analyzed in various ways, [9], [10], [11] and [12]. The outcome of such an analysis depends on a large number of parameters and assumptions.…”

“…These challenges include, the elimination of power fluctuations, improving power quality, connection of wind farms to weak grids, prediction of wind power and changes in operating strategies of conventional power plants [2]. Irregular variations of the wind power are the root cause of the first challenge, and more or less partial cause of the others [3]. Therefore, mitigation of wind power fluctuation becomes the critical and most effective way of addressing these challenges to promote wind energy.…”

“…Of these technologies, the most promising energy storage devices for short term power exchange are flywheels and supercapacitors [3]. Supercapacitors have a high power density, low standby losses and virtually unlimited cycle life.…”
