Wild Musa Species Collection of Purwodadi Botanic Garden: Inventory and Its Morpho-taxonomic Review

Abstract: Indonesia, being part of the center of origin of bananas (Musaceae), has a large number diversity of bananas both wild seeded species and edible seedless cultivated varieties. Inventory of wild Musa species in Purwodadi Botanic Garden has been conducted through compiling data records from PBG's Registration section, field inspection and observation to living collections in the garden, herbarium specimens and literature studies. The results show that total 17 wild Musa accessions has been recorded planted in Pu… Show more

“…Some living banana plants in the form of suckers, and seeds of wild bananas were collected for ex-situ conservation in Purwodadi Botanic Garden, Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. Further identifications of genomic group and sub-group of recorded bananas were confirmed using references available, including Simmonds (1959), Espino et al (1992), Jumari and Pudjoarinto (2000), Valmayor et al (2000), Daniells et al (2011), Hapsari et al (2015b, Hapsari et al (2015c). Online resources were also used: Banana cultivar checklist (http: //www.promusa.org/ Banana+cultivar+checklist) and Musa Germplasm Information System/MGIS (http: //www.cropdiversity.org/mgis/).…”

“…Pisang Raja cultivars were originated from several districts of Java Island, consisting of 8 cultivars from Central Java, 4 cultivars from East Java, and 1 cultivar from Jakarta (Table 1). The genomic group of each Pisang Raja cultivar was previously identified morphologically based on minimal descriptor for bananas (Simmonds, 1959), according to information from the curators, and also from some references (Jumari & Pudjoarinto, 2000;Sukartini, 2007;Wahyuningtyas, 2009;Hapsari, 2014;Hapsari et al, 2015b, Nedha et al, 2017. It comprised of AAA, AAB and ABB genomes (Table 1).…”
