Widespread mechanical pain hypersensitivity in patients with chronic migraine and temporomandibular disorders: relationship and correlation between psychological and sensorimotor variables

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to assess mechanical hyperalgesia in the trigeminal and extra-trigeminal regions in patients with chronic migraine (CM) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in comparison to asymptomatic subjects and to determine the association between sensorimotor variables and psychological and disability variables and evaluate the prediction of a sensorimotor variables though psychological and disability variables in patients with CM and TMD. Material and methods: A total of 52 subjects with co… Show more

“…The onset and persistence of head and face pain can be related to an impairment in the reception and processing of the nociceptive stimuli and the central nervous system (CNS) [22,23]. During long-term peripheral facial nociception, such as TMD pain, odontalgia and post-face-trauma changes of brainstem and CNS circuits emerge, which may lead to altered facial pain [24].…”

“…After reading full-text of the remaining 27 studies, another nine were excluded because: results were not divided into TTH or migraine [ 31 , 32 , 34 ], text did not include the required data [ 68 ], it was an experimental-induced pain model [ 36 ], results were not separated by gender [ 69 , 70 ], PPT was not assessed with algometer or dynamometer [ 43 ], or due to the absence of IHS criteria [ 71 ]. Finally, 18 studies satisfied all inclusion criteria and were included in the review of migraine ( Figure 2 ) [ 7 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 52 , 55 , 60 , 63 , 66 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 ].…”

“…The recruitment process of the patients with migraine was done from tertiary hospitals [ 14 , 15 , 72 ], outpatient clinics [ 52 , 73 ], hospitals [ 75 , 77 ], pain clinics [ 79 ], advertisements at universities or local newspapers [ 63 , 74 , 78 , 79 ], university centres of ageing [ 63 ], random sample population [ 55 , 66 ], and social media such as Facebook [ 78 , 79 ].…”
