Many so‐called structurally disadvantaged rural regions are characterized by an ongoing demographic change, low economic productivity, and an insufficient infrastructure. Paradoxically, citizens of such regions are often urged to address local challenges by developing innovative ideas, products, or services. Innovation is becoming a “message of salvation” and imperative to local action due to a rise of an innovation regime that conceptualizes innovation as reflexive and ubiquitous. Unlike cities, however, disadvantaged rural regions are often seen as not conducive to innovation. And older adults are rarely ever regarded as potential innovators. This article will examine how innovations emerge in disadvantaged rural regions and what role older adults play in this context. It focuses on social innovation which is important for processes of rural renewal. Drawing on insights gained through the “Innovation in Rural Municipalities” research project, the paper illustrates the resourcefulness of older adults in the context of socially innovative community development. Older adults can in fact act as drivers of innovative projects, actively participate in and make use of social innovations. Their specific role, however, depends on their personal motives, community‐related interests, and available resources.

Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag untersucht, welche Bedeutung das ehrenamtliche Engagement im Alter für die Bildung einer Biografie hat. Angesichts zunehmender Hilfe-und Pflegebedürftigkeit älterer Menschen gewinnt das ehrenamtliche Engagement der jungen Alten an Bedeutung. Vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmenden Pluralisierung und Individualisierung des Alters sollen biografische Bedeutungen des ehrenamtlichen Engagements differenziert beschrieben werden. Dazu wird der methodisch-theoretische Ansatz der biografischen Forschung expliziert. Dieser schließt an die Lebensweltlichkeit der lebensgeschichtlichen Erzählung an, konzipiert im Unterschied dazu Biografie als ein soziales Konstrukt, wodurch sich subjektive Auseinandersetzungen mit gesellschaftlichen Strukturen rekonstruieren lassen. Die Gewichtung von Subjekt und Gesellschaft wird durch in der Alternsforschung vorliegende Studien auf die Untersuchungsfrage modifiziert beschrieben. Demnach sucht diese Studie ausgehend von der lebensgeschichtlichen Erzählung nach der biografischen Bedeutung des ehrenamtlichen Engagements. Vier Typen der biografischen Bedeutung können unterschieden werden. Das Ehrenamt wird lebensgeschichtlich bedeutsam als berufliche Kontinuität, biografische Kontinuität, biografische Bilanz und biografische Arbeit. Diskutiert werden Bedeutung von Bildung und persönlicher Ansprache für die Gewinnung und Begleitung der Ehrenamtlichen sowie lebensgeschichtliche Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten innerhalb der einzelnen Typen. Künftige Forschungen sollten klären, wie verschiedene Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem eigenen Altern entstehen.Schlüsselwörter Ehrenamt · Alter · Biografie · Biografieforschung · Typenbildung · Produktivität im Alter Biographical significance of voluntary engagements in old ageAbstract This study investigated what significance volunteering in old age has for the creation of a biography. Volunteering by the younger elderly has increased in significance in light of the growing need for assistance and care for older people. Against a backdrop of increasing pluralization and individualization of the elderly, the biographical significance of voluntary engagements will be described discriminately. For this purpose the methodological and theoretical approach to biographical research will be explicated. This includes the living environment conceived in the biographical narrative, unlike biography as a social construct, through which subjective conflicts with social structures can be reconstructed. The evaluation of subject and society is described in a way which is modified to the research question through existing studies in aging research. Accordingly this study will pursue the biographical significance of voluntary engagements based on the biographical narrative and four types of biographical significance can be distinguished.
