Multiple Input Multiple Output antenna systems have been the key reasons behind tremendous increase in speed with which data can be transferred through air. The focus area with these antenna designs has been to obtain small size with good performance of the system. In this paper a MIMO antenna system is proposed that is made up of two PIFA elements. The system is capable of operating in advanced LTE In recent times, MIMO platforms have been worked upon to reduce their dimensions in order to incorporate more antenna terminals on a single platform. The problem with the reduced size of the MIMO systems is the increase in mutual coupling between antenna terminals [3]. This interaction between electromagnetic radiation of the antenna elements lead to degradation in the performance parameters of the MIMO system [4]. Many performance enhancement techniques to improve the performance of closely spaced MIMO antenna elements systems have been proposed. These techniques include the use of defected ground structures, impedance transformers, neutralization lines, parasitic components etc. These techniques try to divert the direction of the surface current flowing on the antenna surface to reduce electromagnetic interaction between antenna elements [5], [6]. The disadvantages of above mentioned techniques are their complex geometry and comparatively large design. Recently, a performance enhancement technique using metamaterial structures is being used in MIMO antenna systems to reduce the mutual interaction between elements and increase the overall performance of the system. Metamaterial are negative permeability material structures that offer imaginary propagation constant for surface electromagnetic waves and hence curtail them from propagating from one terminal to another. This results in a reduction in mutual coupling and an increase in the isolation [7]. This reduction in mutual coupling reflects on the performance of the MIMO system also with improved MIMO coefficients like TARC, ECC and Channel Capacity Loss. MIMO systems that exist in literature focus on wideband operations but there are hardly any systems which primarily focus upon advanced LTE bands. The wideband designs result in moderate performance of the systems in these particular bands. There are various MIMO antenna designs in literature which include [8], in which two element MIMO system for ultra-wide band (UWB) operation is proposed. In this article, a new A‐shaped dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) excited by a conformal strip is proposed for wideband applications. The wide bandwidth is achieved by combining two adjacent modes that is, TM101 and TM103. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DRA offers an impedance bandwidth (for S11≤−10 dB) of 59.7% (3.24‐6.0 GHz), covering IEEE 802.11 and U‐NII bands. The antenna provides a fairly stable radiation pattern with the gain ranging from 5.29 to 7 dBi across the operating bandwidth. A dual‐element multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) system is also realized using the proposed wideband DRA. The impedance bandwidth of the dual‐element MIMO antenna is 59.2% and 60.9% for Port1 and Port2, respectively and the isolation between the ports is better than 20 dB across the bandwidth. For Port1, the gain of the MIMO antenna ranging from 6.03 to 7.45 dBi is obtained across the bandwidth. Furthermore, the diversity performance of the MIMO antenna is found to be good with envelope correlation coefficient below 0.003 over the operating band. The proposed antenna could be the potential candidate for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX), wireless local area network (WLAN) and lower European UWB frequency band (3.4‐5.0 GHz) applications.

Summary This article examines a compact dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) for UWB applications. Here a composite feeding structure excites a dielectric resonator which in tern provides the resonant modes TE111, TE121, TE212, and TE222. The dielectric resonator (DR), built of alumina ceramic (εr, DR = 9.8), is mounted on a fractal triangular patch, inspired by Sierpinski Gasket. The suggested DRA is supported by a FR4 substrate (εr, sub = 4.4) and measures compactly 40 × 30 × 8.5 mm3. To confirm the results of its simulations, the proposed antenna's prototype is prepared and measured up to the second iteration. The measured outcome demonstrates that the suggested antenna has a frequency range of 3.38–10.71 GHz (104%) for S11 < −10 dB and provides a maximum gain of 7.23 dBi at 8 GHz along with highest possible simulated efficiency of 98%. The suggested DRA is appropriate for small‐range future 4G/5G UWB wireless multimedia applications due to its ultrawide bandwidth, excellent gain, reasonable efficiency, omnidirectional radiation features, and compact construction. This DRA is also suitable for repeaters of mobile and vehicular communications.
