Wide-Area Measurement-Based Stabilizing Control of Power System Considering Signal Transmission Delay

Abstract: Abstract-Recent technological advances in the area of widearea measurement systems (WAMS) has enabled the use of a combination of measured signals from remote locations for centralized control purpose. The transmitted signals can be used for multiple swing mode damping using a single controller. However, there is an unavoidable delay involved before these signals are received at the controller site. To ensure satisfactory performance, this delay needs to be taken into account in the control design stage. This … Show more

“…The long time delays are detrimental to system stability, degrade the performance and robustness of the system, and deteriorate the effects of power system damping controllers. As mentioned in [11,22], the overshoot of active power oscillation increases and the setting time is lengthened while the time delays occur. Besides, the closed-loop control system may become unstable when the time delay is over a certain value.…”

“…Usually, time delays may range from several microseconds to few hundred milliseconds [13][14][15][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. In this work, extensive simulations are carried out considering various typical values of time delays.…”

“…Fortunately, the new technology of wide-area measurement system (WAMS) offers the potential of global damping controls to ameliorate the situation [1][2][3][4][5]. Several wide-area control schemes have been reported, such as the remote feedback controller [5,6], the multi-loop PSS [4,7], the H∞-approach-based supervisory-level PSS [8] and FACTS controllers employing global signals [9,10].…”
