Why Narcissists Are Unwilling to Apologize: The Role of Empathy and Guilt

Abstract: We hypothesized that narcissists would be unwilling to apologize for their interpersonal transgressions, and that reduced levels of self‐reported empathy and guilt would serially mediate this effect. Narcissism is characterized by little empathy for the victim, which reduces guilt about one's transgressions. Low guilt, in turn, is associated with unwillingness to apologize. In Study 1, we assessed dispositional narcissism, empathy, guilt, and willingness to apologize. In Study 2, we assessed dispositional narc… Show more

“…These hypotheses are supported by the empirical literature on PN, which associates narcissism with decreased empathy (Leunissen, Sedikides, & Wildschut, 2017), decreased ability to recognize others' emotions (Marissen, Deen, & Franken, 2012), and alexythymia, or the difficulty identifying and describing emotions in oneself (Jonason & Krause, 2013)-all deficits that possibly have a neurological basis in narcissism (Fan et al, 2011). Our proposals also find support in the observation that PN involves cognitive empathy with impaired emotional empathy (Ritter et al, 2011)-that is, patients "know" what another person is feeling but cannot feel what that person is feeling.…”

“…Are narcissistic leaders willing to say sorry for the misery they may inflict on others? Leunissen, Sedikides, and Wildschut (2017) examined the relation between narcissism and apologizing. Apology is an admittance of wronging that is contrary to narcissists' highly agentic opinion of themselves.…”

“…Although getting ahead is important to them, getting along is instrumental (Nagler, Reiter, Furtner, & Rauthmann, ). Indeed, they are low on agreeableness, empathy, shame, and guilt, while being callous and unapologetic (Hepper, Hart, Meek, Cisek, & Sedikides, ; Leunissen, Sedikides, & Wildschut, ). They generally also hold others in low regard, even people they consider friends (Park & Colvin, ): Narcissists view members of their social networks through a dismissive, disparaging lens (Lamkin, Clifton, Campbell, & Miller, ).…”
