An unprecedented magnitude of land-use/land-cover changes have led to a rapid conversion of tropical forested landscapes to different land-uses. This comparative study evaluates and reconstructs the recent history (1976–2019) of land-use change and the associated land-use types that have emerged over time in two neighboring rural villages in Southern Mexico. Qualitative ethnographic and oral histories research and quantitative land-use change analysis using remote sensing were used. Findings indicate that several interacting historical social-ecological drivers (e.g., colonization program, soil quality, land conflicts with indigenous people, land-tenure, availability of surrounding land where to expand, Guatemala’s civil war, several agricultural development and conservation programs, regional wildfire, Zapatista uprising, and highway construction) have influenced each village’s own unique land-use change history and landscape composition: the smaller village is characterized by a dominating pasture landscape with some scattered agricultural and forest areas, while the larger village has large conserved forest areas intermixed with pastures, agriculture, oil palm and rubber plantations. The differential histories of each village have also had livelihood diversification implications. It is suggested that landscape history research in tropical agroforest frontiers is necessary because it can inform land-use policies and forest conservation strategies that are compatible with local livelihoods and conservation goals.

En el artículo se analizan los procesos de transformación sociopolítica dela selva Lacandona a partir de tres principales tramas que han hecho del territorio una región para el desarrollo: la trama del extractivismo colonial, la trama del desarrollo rural y la trama del desarrollo sostenible y la conservación ambiental. Se plantea que en los actuales entramados del desarrollo confluyen políticas, actores y proyectos de gobernanza, en el marco de las políticas de desarrollo productivo basadas en la agricultura comercial y las iniciativas de reconfiguración del territorio desde la sostenibilidad. Con base en esta lectura se visualizan las tensiones y contradicciones de las políticas del desarrollo que han hecho de la selva Lacandona un mundo-regional donde convergen principios, ideas e iniciativas del desarrollo heterogéneas, las cuales coexisten en el territorio y dotan de contenido a la región.

While the presence of a strong civil society is recognized as desirable for democracies, an important question is what motivates citizens to join organizations. This article presents novel experimental evidence on the conditions under which citizens join interest organizations. We presented 1,400 citizens in two Mexican states with fliers promoting a new local interest organization. These fliers contain one of four randomly selected recruitment appeals. We find evidence that both brokerage of state patronage and demand-making for local public goods are effective recruitment appeals. The effect for patronage brokerage is especially pronounced among respondents with prior organizational contact, supporting our hypothesis of a “particularistic socialization” effect wherein organizational experience is associated with greater response to selective material benefits. Our findings suggest that under some conditions, rather than generating norms of other-regarding, interest organizations can reinforce members’ individualistic tendencies.
