Why do individuals with anorexia die? A case of sudden death

Abstract: This case illustrates that in AN, pathology may not manifest with obvious clinical features. A high level of clinical vigilance is required. The cause of death in AN cannot reliably be established from antemortem clinical features. We recommend that any AN death be reported and that, where possible, an autopsy be performed. This may lead to advances in knowledge and treatment practices.

“…Orthostatic hypotension is an increase in heart rate of 20 bpm or a blood pressure reduction of 20 mmHg in the transition from clinostatism to orthostatism; consequent to the altered functioning of the autonomic nervous system [23], can cause lipothymia, if marked may be indicative of need for hospitalization [24]. Congestive heart failure may occur in severely defiled and/or re-fed AN patients (due to excess volumes administered and/or hypokalemia and, above all, hypophosphoremia) [25][26][27].…”
