Why Do Blood Donors Lapse or Reduce Their Donation's Frequency?

Abstract: Finding effective ways to retain blood donors is crucial. This study seeks to compare, in a context of a voluntary and nonremunerated system, donor demographics and deterrents to blood donation among plasma/platelet donors (PPDs), regular whole blood donors (WBDs), and lapsed whole blood donors (LWBD). Among 1879 participants to a survey on motivations, time use, and blood donation, 207 WBDs (26%) and 148 PPDs (31%) said that they reduced their donation frequency over the last 5 years. Participants to this sur… Show more

“…Many reported lifestyle events as obstacles, for example combining work or children with blood donations. This is consistent with results from Canada finding time constraints due to work or family life, the main reason for lapsing and reducing donation frequency [2]. However, the Canadian study found that lapsed donors with a university-level education reported time constraints more often than donors with lower education, whereas we found the opposite.…”

“…Had they contacted the donation centre with this self-deferral information, invitations for donation would have been postponed and sent out at an appropriate time. A Canadian study also reported, in consistency with our findings, that male donors stated that they forgot to donate blood as a reason for reducing or ceasing blood donation [2]. The difficulty Canadian donors had integrating blood donation into their lives was more pronounced for males.…”

“…Although time constraints were found as another common reason for self‐deferral in this study, we also observed that donors claimed time constraints as the self‐deferral reason were more likely to donate again compared to donors who claimed other reasons, similar to previous reports (Charbonneau et al ., ). This observation is encouraging, implying that this donor population could be re‐enrolled by appropriate and effective strategies.…”
