“…While smaller relative gonad size has been found intermittently dependent upon season and year, impaired sex steroid production and the presence of intersex has been consistently found downstream of the Kitchener MWWTP (Bahamonde et al, 2014;Tanna et al, 2013;Tetreault et al, 2011). Additionally, male rainbow darter collected downstream of the Kitchener MWWTP have elevated levels of liver vitellogenin expression, a yolk protein precursor that is normally highly expressed in females, but not males (Bahamonde et al, 2014).…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated feminization of male rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) caught near the outfalls of the larger MWWTPs in the Grand River watershed in Southern Ontario (Bahamonde et al, 2014;Tanna et al, 2013;Tetreault et al, 2011). Decreased testis size, a high incidence of intersex (>80%), decreased androgen production, and elevated vtg expression in the liver was found in male rainbow darter (Bahamonde et al, 2014;Tanna et al, 2013;Tetreault et al, 2011).…”

“…Application of transcriptomics in aquatic ecotoxicology represents a powerful genome-based tool that allows one to obtain detailed insight into toxicological responses [20]. However, only a small subset of these studies have examined molecular responses in wild fish populations residing downstream of MWWTP discharges [5,[22][23][24][25]. The oligonucleotide microarray is a tool that can provide insights into transcriptome patterns, allowing one to examine thousands of genes in unison.…”

“…This species is highly abundant throughout the Grand River watershed, and it has a relatively small home range, moving only a few meters, mostly in the spring during spawning [26,27]. High incidence of intersex condition (testes-ova) [26,31], decreased production of androgens [25,26], and reduced reproductive performance [15] have been observed in rainbow darter downstream of the wastewater outfalls. Recent studies have shown that complex mixtures of pollutants released from the 2 major municipal wastewater outfalls in the central reaches of the Grand River (i.e., Kitchener and Waterloo) have resulted in endocrine disruption in rainbow darter.…”
