Who’s About to Leave? A Global Survey of Aspirations and Intentions to Migrate

Abstract: This article analyses aspirations and intentions to migrate based on Gallup World Poll for the period 2010–2015. We estimate individual‐level traits associated with aspirations and intentions to migrate across groups of countries in different regions and with different income levels. This paper brings together previous hypotheses regarding migration aspirations and tests them under several specifications, while keeping separate findings according to migration aspirations and intentions to appreciate difference… Show more

“…Growing numbers of people are on the move worldwide (IOM, 2019), while many more, especially youth, would like to migrate or are already planning to do so in the near future (Migali and Scipioni, 2019;Burrone et al, 2018). Hence, understanding why they decide to migrate need to be a major goal for researchers and policymakers.…”

“…Regardless of the data used, the country sample, or the time-period covered, one of the most common results emerging from the literature is that, keeping everything else constant, young(er) people consistently show stronger migration intention than the rest of population (Burrone et al, 2018;Migali and Scipioni, 2019). Against this background, the study of the determinants of potential migration among youth has sparked increasing research interest over the past decade (Belmonte and McMahon, 2019;Williams et al, 2018).…”

“…Geographic dyadic variables provide a more nuanced perspective by considering other variables such as distance between the place of origin of potential migrants and their desired destination and the existence of networks at destination for high and low educated individuals (Dao et al, 2018 ). Income appears to be a significant determinant of the aspirations to migrate of only low educated individuals while age is a consistent factor for individuals aged 15–19, across all groups of countries (Migali & Scipioni, 2019 ). Youth with strong networks in the receiving country and relatives who send remittances tend to have higher intentions to migrate (Bertoli & Ruyssen, 2018 ).…”

“…In addition, migration is considered the complex result of an interplay between individual aspirations and contextual opportunities. Recent evidence suggests that aspirations are an important prerequisite for migration, but they are also reframed as a consequence of migration ( Czaika and Vothknecht 2014 ; de Haas et al 2019 ; Migali and Scipioni 2019 ). In many cases, migrants have much higher aspirations than non-migrants prior to migration, but also aspirations which are built up as a result of their migration experiences themselves (see also Creighton 2013 ; Carling and Collins 2018 ).…”
