White Matter Lesions as a Predictor of Depression in the Elderly: The 3C-Dijon Study

Abstract: Our data show that depression and WML volumes are strongly related. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of a vascular depression in the elderly.

“…Cross-sectional associations between WMLs and depression have been shown repeatedly, especially for MRI and mainly from clinical studies (Greenwald et al, 1998;Ikram et al, 2010;Kumar et al, 2000;Kumar et al, 2002), although not all studies support this association (Rainer et al, 2006;Skoog et al, 1994). Our finding that WMLs preceded major depression is in agreement with three previous longitudinal studies using MRI (Godin et al, 2008;Steffens et al, 2002;Teodorczuk et al, 2007). However, two longitudinal population-based studies did not support this association (Ikram et al, 2010;Versluis et al, 2006).…”

“…The results from longitudinal population-based studies are conflicting. Three studies using MRI reported that WMLs increased the risk of subsequent depression (Godin et al, 2008;Steffens et al, 2002;Teodorczuk et al, 2007) while two could not confirm these findings (Ikram et al, 2010;Versluis et al, 2006).…”

“…7,10,11 Previous studies have shown associations of CFPWV or local carotid stiffness with various manifestations of cerebral small vessel disease, including WMHV 6,12,17 and subcortical or lacunar infarcts. 6,12,17 In addition, previous studies have shown an association between depression and WMHV 19,38 and lacunar infarcts. 38,39 Furthermore, a population-based study 4 has shown that higher CFPWV and local carotid stiffness were associated with depression.…”

“…10,11 Briefly, 4,931 noninstitutionalized persons aged 65 years and older were recruited from the electoral rolls of Dijon, France, between March 1999 and March 2001. Participants enrolled between June 1999 and September 2000, younger than 80 years, and who were able to come to the examination center (n 5 2,763) were invited to undergo a brain MRI.…”
