Which Stereotest do You Use? A Survey Research Study in the British Isles, the United States and Canada

Abstract: Introduction Stereo vision or stereopsis is the ability to perceive the relative depth of objects based on binocular disparity, which refers to the small difference in angles between images of objects in left and right eyes. Poor stereopsis is often linked to strabismus and amblyopia (Levi, Knill and Bavelier 2015; Read 2015). With misaligned eyes, as in strabismus, the object's images on the left and right retina can be too far apart to fall within the range of fusion matches that can be achieved by the brain… Show more

“…They wore their own glasses or contact lenses if needed. All of the volunteers had normal or corrected-to-normal visual acuity and normal stereo vision [32]. Prior to the experiments, we confirmed that all of the subjects could see the 3D image with the motion parallax only by using the autostereoscopic 3D display.…”

“…Of these, the Randot family of stereotests produced by the Stereo Optical Company (stereooptical.com) are the mostly widely used. The Randot stereotest is the clinical stereotest most often used in the USA and Canada [11], while a PubMed search indicates that Randot tests are also one of the most commonly used for research (the search "testname"[Title/Abstract] AND ((stereo*) OR stereopsis OR amblyopia OR binocular OR strabismus” on 26 th March 2019 returned 165 results for testname =“Randot”, as opposed to 252 for “Titmus”, 143 for “TNO”, 88 for “Frisby”, 83 for “Lang”).…”

“…However, Randot Circles permits scores as low as 20 arcsec, whereas the Preschool Randot test, which is a cyclopean stereotest, has a lowest (best) possible score of 40 arcsec, meaning that most adults obtain the best possible score. Randot Circles is one of the most widely used stereotests in eye clinics, especially in North America 43 . Accordingly, it is useful to compare scores on ASTEROID with scores on this widely‐used clinical stereotest.…”
