Whey protein enhances normal inflammatory responses during cutaneous wound healing in diabetic rats

Abstract: BackgroundProlonged wound healing is a complication of diabetes that contributes to mortality. Impaired wound healing occurs as a consequence of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Whey protein (WP) is able to reduce the oxygen radicals and increase the levels of the antioxidant glutathione. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether dietary supplementation with WP could enhance normal inflammatory responses during wound healing in diabetic rats. Animals were assigned into a wounded c… Show more

“…54 Neutrophils have been shown to act as an early response immune cells that play a key role in the healing of an epithelium-debridement wound. 31 A large number of NK cells infiltrate into the cornea and participate in the modulation of Figure 9 Schematic diagram deciphering the role of balanced IL-1beIL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) signaling in mediating epithelial wound healing and its defects in the diabetic corneas.…”

“…In addition, TGF-β directly stimulates collagen synthesis and decreases extracellular matrix degradation by fibroblasts (Blakytny and Jude 2006). Collagen is critical for the strength and integrity of extracellular matrix and for epithelialization during the later stages of wound healing (Brancato and Albina 2011;Ebaid et al 2011). In our study, WHR was significantly higher in rats from the ES group than in those from the DC group, and the accelerated wound healing observed in the ES group might be due to increased growth factor synthesis.…”

“…The results of all the physical-chemical analyses, sensory tests and physiological parameters were expressed as mean ± standard error of the mean and submitted to Anova followed by Tukey's test (p<0.05) due to normal distribution and because these tests are used in this type of study 4,[9][10][11]28 . We used the Statistical Analysis System (SAS, Institute Inc., Cary, North Carolina, United States, 2006) statistical software version 9.1 and GraphPad Prism 5.0 program (Prism Software ® , Inc., La Jolla, California, United States).…”
