Whey hydrolysate compared with cow's milk-based formula for weaning at about 6 months of age in high allergy-risk infants: effects on atopic disease and sensitization

Abstract: Ninety-one high atopy-risk infants were prospectively followed up to 18 months of age with regard to the development of allergic/atopic manifestations and sensitization. They were randomized into one of two feeding groups, i.e., a hydrolyzed, ultrafiltered cow's milk whey formula, Profylac (n = 32), or an ordinary cow's milk formula (n = 39), for 12 months, started after exclusive breast-feeding for 0-9 (median 6.0) months. Lactating mothers avoided milk, egg, and fish, as did the infants up to 12 months of ag… Show more

“…Although one of those (i.e., the GINI study) was not designed for evaluation of food allergy, it reported on atopic eczema/dermatitis and allergic manifestations including gastrointestinal food allergy (food allergy with manifestations in the gastrointestinal tract), and food sensitization . Two other randomized comparisons failed to find a benefit . However, in one of these, the children were breastfed for a long period and the formula was introduced after the age of 6 months , which may indicate that the window of opportunity for prevention with hydrolyzed formulas is likely to be restricted to the first 6 months.…”

“…Hydrolyzed formulas, soy formulas, and early exposure to cow's milk have been tested for prevention of allergy development. Two systematic reviews 60,61 and 5 RCTs [96][97][98][99][100] evaluated the effects of hydrolyzed formulas on the development of food allergies in children. The effects of soy formula were evaluated by 1 systematic review 59 and 1 RCT.…”

“…Both these regimens resulted in a very low incidence of CMA and other food allergies until the age of 18 months (100)(101)(102)173). In another recent study (199) no significant effect of supplement with hydrolysate formula (eHF) compared with CMF after the age of 6 months in breastfed HR infants was found. Controlled studies concerning the possible preventive effect of avoidance of other potential food allergens, e.g.…”
