When Everything Changes: Using Critical Family History to Deconstruct Keesing and Fitzpatrick Surnames

Abstract: DNA analysis has enabled a much deeper interrogation of our surnames, Keesing and Fitzpatrick, than was possible via traditional genealogical research. This can inform us regarding the potential 'hidden' complexities of some surnames. Through juxtaposing the narratives of our family histories and DNA findings we demonstrate, using collaborative autoethnography, how surnames can be haunted by ghosts both real and imagined. The DNA-enabled critical exploration of the history of our surnames, in the context of th… Show more

“…1400 AD. In other words, there is zero genetic evidence this Fitzpatrick clan was formed by direct paternal descent from an ancient ancestor who bore a Pátraic-surnamerather, the direct paternal lineage is elsewhere (Fitzpatrick & Fitzpatrick, 2020), and here lie some points of intrigue.…”

“…In-depth Y-DNA surname studies can provide remarkable insights into paternal lineages, in many cases extending the definition of those lineages right back to the point when surnames were taken and beyond -providing insights into more ancient clan connections. And such studies involving surnames found in Éire can result in a wide range of outcomes concerning surname origins -from clear confirmations of historical records and pedigrees to problematic disruptions and subsequent personal and clan identity crises, the latter exemplified by the surname Fitzpatrick (Fitzpatrick & Fitzpatrick 2020).…”

“…From the onset of the Fitzpatrick DNA Study (Fitzpatrick, 2005), it was clear there were several Fitzpatrick lines, and they were genetically diverse. One of the more extensive lines was known as the Nine of Clads since it was the ninth line discovered, and it was speculated the line originated in An Cabhán.…”

“…From the early days of the Fitzpatrick Y-DNA project it was evident there was no single genetic Fitzpatrick patrilineage, rather several larger haplogroups were identified based on analysis of Y-DNA Short Tandem Repeats (STRs), which were broadly associated with either Counties, such as An Cabhán (Co. Cavan), An Dún (Co. Down), or Laois (Co. Laois) (Fitzpatrick, 2005). Today the complexity of Fitzpatrick Y-DNA lines is soundly understood ) and yet an understanding of how the Fitzpatrick surname, long considered a patronymic from a sole progenitor, came into the possession of numerous and diverse patrilineages is limited.…”
