When age matters: boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have growth delay and a fat mass accumulation, as they get older

Abstract: Anthropometry and body composition evaluation in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are challenging, but crucial methods to evaluate the nutritional status, and better anthropometric reference values and body composition predictive equations are needed for this population. Based on these aspects, this study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that changes in anthropometric parameters and body composition of boys with DMD occur according to age. A cross-sectional study with 49 individuals diagnosed wit… Show more

“…A avaliação antropométrica é uma etapa que compõe a avaliação nutricional em que as dimensões e a composição corporal são mensuradas. Na DMD, a avaliação antropométrica é de suma importância, pois pode verificar o estado nutricional ao longo da progressão da doença (CUNHA et al, 2021).…”

“…When small amounts of dystrophin are produced, the disease is classi ed as Becker muscular dystrophy [2]. Dystrophin stabilizes skeletal and cardiac muscle by connecting actin in muscle bers to the extracellular matrix; in its absence, repeated damage to muscle bers leads to chronic in ammation, changes in body composition, and weakness [3].…”

“…Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an autosomal-recessive disorder on the X chromosome de ned by mutations in the dystrophin gene, leading to severe de ciency in dystrophin protein [1]. When there is some dystrophin production, the disease is classi ed as Becker muscular dystrophy [2]. Dystrophin stabilizes skeletal and cardiac muscle by connecting actin in muscle bers to the extracellular matrix; in the absence of dystrophin, recurrent muscle ber injury leads to chronic in ammation, changes in body composition, and weakness [3].…”
