Wheat leaf photosynthesis loss due to leaf rust, with respect to lesion development and leaf nitrogen status

Abstract: Summary• In wheat ( Triticum aestivum cv. Soissons) plants grown under three different fertilisation treatments, we quantified the effect of leaf rust ( Puccinia triticina ) on flag leaf photosynthesis during the whole sporulation period.• Bastiaans' model: Y = (1 − x ) β was used to characterize the relationship between relative leaf photosynthesis ( Y ) and disease severity ( x ). The evolution of the different types of symptoms induced by the pathogen (sporulating, chlorotic and necrosed tissues) was evalua… Show more

“…This result of increased grain weight from foliar fungicide application was in agreement with previous findings [8,14,17,18]. Also, this increase in mean kernel weight can be attributed to leaf area protection as foliar fungicide application leads to higher leaf area index [11,12], which enhances the efficiency of photosynthesis and therefore the grain filling [12]. Grain yield per spike is another important component of yield.…”

“…For all samples, the imaging height was 30 cm. Various symptoms of the leaf rust disease including yellow, orange, dark brown and the dry were extracted from the digital photos [14]. Different symptoms of the wheat rust have been illustrated in Figure 1A,B.…”

“…The final symptom is dry leaf. It is worth noting that the different symptoms of leaf rust can be simultaneously observed in various parts of a leaf [21].A few investigations have shown the potential of SVIs for disease detection. Mahlein et al and Rump et al demonstrated the effect of disease symptoms on recorded reflectance spectra [22][23][24].…”
