Yellow Rust Effects on Grain Yield, and Yield Components of Some Spring Bread Wheat Cultivars under Rainfed Conditions

Abstract: Stripe rust caused by Puccinia striiformis, is currently the major foliar disease of spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Tunisia, causing serious yield losses and affecting grain quality. Farmers often use foliar fungicide application or resistant cultivars to counter yield loss, however, this is hampered by a lack of resistant varieties. To investigate the effects of genetic resistance and foliar fungicide application on disease level and yield components, six improved varieties were evaluated at the… Show more

“…In the presence of rust the flow of carbohydrates through the phloem to the grains is considerably reduced (Chen, 2005) due to the reduction of the photosynthetic area (Chen et al, 2015). As a result, infected plants produce fewer spikelets and form less and shriveled grains (Chen et al, 2013), which are of low industrial quality and lower food value (Afzal et al, 2008; Abdennour et al, 2018).…”

“…Due to stripe rust grain yield losses of 10 to 70% have been reported depending upon the cultivar grown and the environmental conditions [17]. Great losses of wheat production have been associated with stripe rust, when epiphytotics occurred under favorable conditions [18]. Under favorable conditions, stem rust can also cause yield losses of up to 100% in susceptible varieties [16].…”
