What’s new in HIV dermatology?

Abstract: HIV has long been associated with a number of inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic skin conditions. In the era of anti-retroviral therapy, we have discovered even more about the relationship between skin disease and chronic immunosuppression. In particular, clinicians still face the propensity of persons living with HIV to develop difficult-to-control viral infections, chronic skin inflammation, and pruritus and—particularly as patients age—various types of skin cancers. Here, we summarize recent updates i… Show more

“…In immunodeficient HIV patients, even saprophytes may penetrate into deeper layers of the tissue, frequently causing pruritic folliculitis. Other typical skin conditions in PLWH include dry skin, chronic pruritus, exacerbation of atopic dermatitis, and nodular prurigo [21,22]. Apart from common dermatoses (oral candidiasis, herpes zoster, seborrheic eczema), immunodeficient patients may also show skin conditions that are otherwise rare.…”

“…Along with the occurrence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) other dermatological conditions such as extensive oral candidiasis, herpes zoster and oral hairy leukoplakia have been described as indicators for this syndrome (4). The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) more than 20 years ago has diminished and altered the range of dermatological conditions, with improved immunosuppression of CD4 lymphocytes (5,6). However, PLWH still face a number of viral skin infections, chronic inflammation or various forms of skin cancer (5).…”

Understanding the complex relationship between the immune system and dermatoses suffered by PLWH can lead to a better therapeutic approach and appropriate management.…”
