What Research Evidence Is Valid for Psychotherapy Research?

Abstract: Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) have contributed to improved clinical practice with increased use of effective and life-saving treatments for severe diseases. However, the EBM model is less suitable for psychotherapy research than for pharmacological research and somatic medicine. The randomized controlled trial (RCT) design is an example of experimental methodology, which inevitably has more imperfections in psychotherapy research because psychotherapy RCTs cannot use double-blinding and the treatments tested a… Show more

“…With regard to the research design, it is necessary to reflect on the fact that 76% of the studies included consist of RCT and this is a very relevant aspect because it allows to attribute a significant value to the conclusions that can be drawn. The prevalence of RCTs can be explained if we consider that in this type of study researchers are required to perform a preliminary assessment of the integrity or one of its components, in order to ensure that the results obtained can be generalizable (Philips & Falkenström, 2021).…”

“…For future studies, larger sample sizes must be achieved to ensure statistically sound evaluation of effects. Furthermore, alternative research designs may also be considered, such as cohort designs which have been discussed to better fit the investigation of psychotherapy effects in individuals with complex disorders [ 41 ].…”

“…As a result, RCTs are suggested as top research evidence for psychotherapies. 15 Adding on to these, reviews that looked at psychotherapeutic treatments for PNES had stressed the importance of suitable methodology, especially of controlled trials. 1 , 2 Hence, we aimed at understanding the impact of different psychotherapies by reviewing RCTs conducted for PNES.…”
