What Is the Relationship between Technological Innovation and Energy Consumption? Empirical Analysis Based on Provincial Panel Data from China

Abstract: This paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption and technological innovation using a dynamic panel data model and regional-level data from China for the period 1995-2012. In contrast to previous studies, it examines the short and long-run bilateral relationship between technological innovation and energy consumption. The results show that in the short run, technological innovation leads to an increase in energy consumption, while energy consumption has no significant effect on technological… Show more

“…Investigation of regularities of influence of these factors on the volume of consumption is considered, in particular, in [51,52]. At the same time, many authors focus on impact of technological changes on the reduction of consumption of energy resources in conditions of raising their prices [53][54][55]. Also, in [56] states that consumers can in some way stimulate enterprises to implement energy-saving measures.…”

“…[3] examines the interaction relationship among privatization of state-owned enterprises, intellectual property protection and innovation by using the Difference in Difference method, arguing that the privatization of state-owned enterprises significantly increases patent numbers, and the protection of intellectual property policy mitigates the advantages of private sectors. [4] estimates the dynamic panel data model with energy consumption and TFP, a proxy of innovation, confirming that innovation and energy consumption has a correlation in the short-term, yet it is unclear whether innovation leads to a long-term decrease in energy consumption. Using import and patent data to investigate the relationship between competitiveness of the import industry sector and innovation, [5] concludes that competitiveness boosts progress in innovation.…”

“…Among technological changes that are made at the enterprises, it is necessary to emphasize resource-saving technological changes in which the main purpose is the increase of efficiency of use of the corresponding production resources of the enterprises [7,8]. In particular, in modern economic conditions of many countries the processes of labor-saving [9] and energy-saving [10] technological changes are intensified. Along with it, information, financial and other barriers appear on the way of technological changes [11,12], the removal of which can give a powerful impulse to accelerate the processes of technological renewal.…”
