What is the impact of rural bank credit access on the technical efficiency of smallholder cassava farmers in Ghana? An endogenous switching regression analysis

Abstract: This paper assesses the impact of access to credit from rural and community banks (RCBs) on the technical efficiency of smallholder cassava farmers in Ghana. The study employed the stochastic frontier, and endogenous switching regression models to estimate the technical efficiency, and the impact of RCB credit access, respectively, on a randomly selected sample of 300 smallholder cassava farmers in the Fanteakwa District of Ghana. Results suggest that cassava farmers in the District are 70.5 percent technicall… Show more

“…This study advises that farmers improve their seed quality to achieve maximum output. This finding agrees with Missiame, Nyikal, and Irungu (2021), who employed the stochastic frontier method and found a positive and significant impact of seed on cassava production in Ghana. Furthermore, organic fertilizers had a negative and significant impact on cassava output.…”

“…The positive relationship implies that the importance of credit in agricultural production allows producers to satisfy the cash needs caused by the production cycle of land preparation, planting, cultivation, and harvesting. The result is similar to [33,39] results which stated that access to credit potentially ensures the adoption of new varieties and other inputs which increased crop productivity.…”

“…The result showed that only 20.00% of sampled household heads utilized credit for increasing tomato production. In this vein, [33] argued that smallholder farmers used credit availability as the best option to diversify their economic activities and increase financial resources to purchase agricultural inputs.…”

“…This implies that, as the access to agricultural credit increases, the likelihood of the farmers' awareness of the technology and their adoption of the improved wheat varieties also increases. Previous literature has recognized the potentials of credit in enhancing the farmers' awareness and their adoption of the improved wheat varieties [56]. The primary reason for the farmers' low levels of awareness and their decisions to adopt, or to adopt poorly, is identified by the studies as poverty, whereas credit helps to alleviate financial constraints and enables farmers to access agricultural technologies [46,57].…”
