What is the impact of tumour size on dermoscopic diagnosis of BCC?

Abstract: Despite determined differences in vascular features and multiple erosions between the small and large BCCs, the results of further investigation within the specific groups indicate that dermoscopy is reliable for the diagnosis of BCC regardless of its size.

“…Naked‐eye inspection and dermoscopy are safe, simple, noninvasive and inexpensive tests . Dermoscopy is a well‐established tool for diagnosis of BCC, regardless of its size . Dermoscopy increases the diagnostic accuracy for BCC diagnosis from 58% to 84% over naked‐eye examination .…”

“…Reflectance confocal microscopy allowed to recognize the malignant nature of lesions through the identification of relatively easy detectable features as basaloid island for BCC, 18 presence of not only dendritic cells but moreover pagetoid roundish cells with periadnexal behaviour for LM, the last helpful in the differential diagnosis with PAK 19,20 . The routine use of dermoscopy allows the detection of melanomas of which patients are unaware.…”

“…Diagnosis of BCC has been greatly improved by dermoscopy, which is associated with high sensitivity and specificity (1,2). However, when tumours are small in size, classic dermoscopic features, such as large blue-grey ovoid nests, multiple blue-grey globules, and arborizing vessels, are frequently unclear or are only partially present, which makes an accurate diagnosis difficult (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). Capillaroscopy (e.g.…”
