What influence do vets have on vaccination decision of dog owners? Results of an online survey

Abstract: Background: This study was performed to analyse the influence of veterinary advice as well as other sources of information on vaccination decision of dog owners. Methods: A total of 1480 dog owners participated in this exclusively online conducted survey. Mean comparisons and correlation analyses were performed to check bivariate relationships between general data from the dogs, the dog owners, the vaccination decision making and risk/benefit analyses. Results: The results confirm that veterinarians are the mo… Show more

“…All scholarly papers that addressed “vaccine fatigue”, “vaccination fatigue”, or “immunization fatigue” were examined. Records were excluded if: (1) they were not published in English, (2) the vaccines studied were not for humans [e.g., for dogs ( 23 , 24 ) and poultry ( 25 , 26 )], and (3) they did not provide full text for review. In terms of theoretical framework, the narrative literature review approach was adopted, which could be understood as “an objective, thorough summary and critical analysis of the relevant available research and non-research literature on the topic being studied” ( 27 ).…”

“…Dogs from the oldest age group (> 8 years old) were over 10 times less likely to have received a vaccine against leptospirosis than dogs < 1 year old. Vaccine uptake is typically higher for primary courses than booster doses [19,20,[24][25][26][27]. This may reflect novelty of a new pet, scheduling effort for an annual vaccine, cost concerns or perceived immunity from the initial vaccine course [19,20].…”

“…It is unclear how much impact individual veterinarians might have on vaccine administration or whether policy is set at a clinic or corporate level. Some work suggests the influence of the veterinarian has a large impact on owner's vaccine decision making [20,27]. Unfortunately, due to database limitations exploration of this veterinarian effect was not possible.…”

“…This is especially the case in the field of companion animal studies; in the past five and a half years, a search on Web of Science (Titles "pet" + "survey"; "rat" + "survey"; Jan 2015-July 2021) identified more than thirty studies of companion animal health and welfare using survey methodologies. Veterinary issues concerning cats and dogs, such as vaccination rates and attitudes towards vaccination amongst owners 6,7 , and the prevalence and prevention of parasitic infections [8][9][10] , have demonstrated the value of survey techniques as an important first step towards improving the health and welfare of owned animals. By following owner report surveys with experimental studies and sampling (e.g.…”
