Leptospirosis vaccination in dogs attending UK primary care practices: vaccine uptake and factors associated with administration

Abstract: Background Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that is found globally and affects most mammalian species. Vaccination of dogs against leptospirosis is an important approach to preventing clinical disease, or reducing disease severity, as well as reducing transmission of the infection to humans. Although it is generally considered to be a ‘core’ vaccine, there is limited information on the level of leptospirosis vaccine usage and factors associated with its usage in dogs in the UK. The study aim… Show more

“…The only place of source reduction possible is in farming communities through extensive animal vaccination. However, animal vaccination strategies still need improvements in many settings [ 53 , 54 ]. Primary prevention through human vaccination seems more logical than source reduction, which also deserves consideration in highly exposed workers.…”

“…Most of the contemporary issues discussed in the 2016 version of these guidelines (Day et al., 2016) remain of current interest although many further topics and issues have emerged since then. Since 2016, concerns about a low proportion of all pets receiving the benefit of vaccination have grown in some countries (Malter et al., 2022; Taylor et al., 2022). A low proportion of vaccinated pet animals adversely impacts “herd immunity” (Datta & Roy, 2022).…”

“…In a recent study of almost 1 million UK dogs, Taylor et al. (2022) showed that only 49% had received at least one vaccine against leptospirosis in the 12‐month study period. In this study, Dogs over 8 years of age were 12.5 times less likely to have received the benefit of vaccination against leptospirosis than were dogs under 1 year of age.…”

“…There is recorded resistance for sulfonamide, neomycin, actidione, polymyxin, vancomycin, and rifampicin against Leptospira , whereas resistance for doxycycline and penicillin remains unknown. Antimicrobial resistance in leptospirosis is not a significant issue [ 39 ].…”
