The environmental and economic benefits of adopting a circular economy (CE) approach could be significant for firms. The CE and packaging constitute a fundamental binomial for our economy, yet there are still few studies of the advantages for food value chains, especially in the wine sector. Therefore, in this paper, we address this research gap by measuring the environmental and economic performance of a circular business model (CBM) adopting the wine industry as a reference. We apply a combination of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methods to a small Italian winemaking firm, which implements a circular strategy through the take‐back and refurbishment of wine packaging components. Results show that by implementing this sustainable and CBM, a firm can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 8 to 90% and save from 6 to 63% of its economic costs.

Design for Longevity - A Framework to Support the Designing of a Product's Optimal Lifetime

Extending the lifespan of products and parts is seen as a solution in the transition towards a circular economy. There are many proposed design approaches argued to facilitate this. However, extending the lifespan of products and parts is not always desirable, and product developers should instead strive to design for a specific longevity; the product's optimal lifetime. The latter in turn depends on many various contextual factors, and this paper has identified the three main contextual factors as; the user, the business, and the resource efficiency. Considering these three appropriately can help product developers to define their product's optimal lifetime. Altogether, these components promote the mindset of Design for Longevity. Specifically, as extracted from this paper: “Design for Longevity aims at designing products with an optimal lifetime, where optimal means taking the user, the business and the resource efficiency perspectives into account when designing the life of a product”. A Design for Longevity framework is proposed and evaluated in this paper, and it is concluded that the proposed Design for Longevity framework can support product developers to implement the Design for Longevity mindset.

Service-dominant logic and circular economy – An attempt at integrating two paradigms

Based on an analysis of the core concepts of the two paradigms “Service-dominant Logic” (SDL) and “Circular Economy” (CE), this research concludes that the concepts of SDL need to be extended to cover the impacts of the use of material resources and infrastructure which are inseparable from service-for-service exchange. Consequently, SDL’s concept of “value” as something entirely subjective and contextual, should be adjusted to reflect the massive impacts of material resource use in service-for-service exchange. The research concludes that an integration between the two paradigms is possible and would be beneficial for both. It would provide SDL with a “sustainability compass” and CE with a set of productive concepts that could be helpful in the identification of areas where service intervention could support more circularity in processes and actor networks and help design and develop service models and practices in support of the transition to a circular economy.
