What Are the Correlates of Interdisciplinary Research Impact? The Case of Corporate Governance Research

Abstract: We explore the concept of interdisciplinary research impact and better understand what factors might be associated with it. Using the field of corporate governance research as a case study and linking our research impact concept to a novel measure of scholarly citation rates, we seek to understand why some corporate governance scholars are cited more than others. We first developed a comprehensive ranking of the top-100 scholars cited for their research in corporate governance and then compared that "high-impa… Show more

“…We then adjusted the number of publications by the number of coauthors involved in each paper and by the professional age of each academic (years since PhD completion). The adjustment for coauthorship (i.e., fractional count) is recommended by prior studies (e.g., Judge, Weber, & Muller-Kahle, 2012;Stephan & Levin, 1991) as a better way to measure individual input into the production of research. Our data allowed us to address the limitation of Judge et al's study 2012by calculating the exact number of coauthors for each paper.…”

“…Our use of the word "relationships" instead of "networks" is deliberate: Our research shows the importance of strong ties, that is, repeated collaborations built on mutual trust and understanding. Rather than teaching PhD students how to build networks that help achieving short-term goals, such as finding a job (e.g., de Janasz & Forret, 2008), we need to teach them how to network to improve their long-term work performance (Judge et al, 2012). This type of networking requires understanding of a potential network partner and deliberate efforts to find or create fit between oneself and a potential collaborator.…”

“…It is not easy managing an interdisciplinary journal focused with a global perspective, but I remain convinced that we occupy a unique and important space in scholarly activity. The field of comparative corporate governance is now a rich conversation amongst many different disciplines (Judge, Weber, & Muller‐Kahle, ) with important implications for the global economy (Filatotchev & Boyd, ).…”

“…Para analisar o perfil e a evolução dos estudos internacionais do tema Governança Corporativa nos esportes, realizou-se um estudo bibliométrico (Ramos-Rodríguez e Ruíz-Navarro, 2004;Francisco, 2011) complementado com a análise de redes sociais (Judge et al, 2012). Esse estudo examina apenas artigos publicados em periódicos internacionais com peer review, por estes serem considerados conhecimento certificado que ultrapassou a avaliação pelos pares num processo de avaliação e legitimação.…”
