Several recent studies have examined the effects of mental health and neuroscientific evidence on attitudes toward criminal defendants, suggesting that these factors may influence juror decision-making in meaningful ways. Few studies to date have manipulated both of these variables while also considering theoretically important individual difference variables (e.g., political orientation). Using a criminal case simulation, this study manipulated the presence of evidence concerning mental disorders (psychopathy and schizophrenia) and increasing levels of neuroscientific detail regarding a defendant's brain injury, and examined verdicts and sentencing recommendations in over 400 persons attending jury duty. Main effects were detected for mental health testimony and political orientation, although interactions were noted as well. More negative reactions to defendants labeled as psychopaths were relatively consistent, whereas participants who identified as liberal generally were less punitive towards a defendant identified as schizophrenic than were more conservative jurors. Consistent with other recent research, juror perceptions of the defendant's level of psychopathic traits (independent of the effects of the experimental manipulations) predicted guilty verdicts and longer sentencing recommendations. Research on the Indian culture is limited, with even less on the Gujarati culture specifically. The present study involved 25–35-year-old Indian Gujarati women living in London. The aim was to explore their experiences with balancing two cultures, and whether they portrayed a divided “home self” and “social self”. Data was collected through virtual, semi-structured interviews with ten participants and analysis was conducted using inductive thematic analysis. Being the primary researcher a member of the Gujarati community, autoethnography was integrated in the study. Three key themes emerged from the data: restrictions, gender inequality, and communication barriers. The themes portrayed experiences of balancing two cultures and how acculturation can steer individuals away from rigid Indian traditions to enable harmonious embodiment of both cultures. The concept of a divided “home self” and “social self” can aid in understanding the experiences of Gujarati women in the context of healthcare and social support settings.

Confl itos de interesse: nada a declarar. Resumo Objetivo: Analisar comparativamente as atitudes e as experiências de enfermeiros de cuidados primários de Brasil e Portugal frente à pessoa com doença mental. Métodos: Estudo transversal, quantitativo realizado com 500 enfermeiros de cuidados primários. A coleta dos dados ocorreu por meio de questionário sócio demográfi co e da escala "Opiniões sobre a Doença Mental". Aplicou-se estatística descritiva e correlacional, com os testes de Mann-Whitney e correlação de Spearman (p<0,05). Resultados: Os enfermeiros brasileiros e portugueses demonstraram atitudes positivas ao apresentar, no total das dimensões da escala, pontuação abaixo da média (43%) e (74%), respectivamente, exceto nas dimensões Autoritarismo (M=44,6), Restrição Social (M= 42,0) e de Etiologia Interpessoal (M=30,6) frente à pessoa com doença mental, os enfermeiros brasileiros apresentaram média mais elevada. Conclusão: No geral, as atitudes em ambos os países em relação às pessoas com doença mental são positivas, exceto na dimensão Autoritarismo. As experiências de cuidados interferem nas atitudes dos enfermeiros nos dois países. Atitudes negativas devem ser reconhecidas e desconstruídas para inclusão da saúde mental nos cuidados primários.
