PurposeThis study aims to have a holistic understanding of psychological determinants of consumers' e-waste recycling behavior to promote sustainable post-consumption behavior through end-of-life electronic products exchange (EEPE) program.Design/methodology/approachThe study integrated additional cognitive and noncognitive factors within the Theory of Planned Behavior. Data were collected from 334 participants who were purposively recruited from well-known online retailers in an emerging market, with the data analyzed using structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results provide some fresh insights, such as the significant positive influence of recycling habits, economic benefits and attitudes toward nudging on EEPE, with a distinct serial mediation link from recycling habits to EEPE behavior.Practical implicationsThis study highlights some relevant sustainable marketing strategies including the integration of nudging and habits as behavioral interventions for promoting e-waste recycling.Originality/valueThe originality of this study relates to (1) testing the significance of nudging in promoting sustainable postconsumption behavior and (2) revealing a serial mediation effect of recycling habits on EEPE behavior via attitude toward e-waste recycling and EEPE intention.

Impact of Environmental Uncertainties and Strategic Flexibility in Innovation Activities on NEV Battery Recycling Firms in China

Due to the popularization and development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) worldwide, power batteries that have been used are being retired and replaced. In China’s battery recycling industry, the legal NEV battery recycling enterprises are at a negative financial performance. Based on theory of organizational adaptation, the key to innovation performance and sustainable development is recognition of the environment and strengthening organizational flexibility. This study empirically explores the bidirectional dynamic relationships among heterogeneous environmental uncertainties, innovation activities, firm growth and strategic flexibility in Chinese NEV battery recycling firms. A total of 1040 sample data were collected from 2015 to 2021. The research results demonstrate that environmental uncertainty (EU), strategic flexibility (SF) and innovation activities (INNO) all had impacts on firm growth (FG). Specifically, INNO had strongly negative effects in the short term, and in the long term, it will bring a positive effect to FG; the impact of EPU was more important than market uncertainty (MU) to FG and innovation activities. This could be due to the dependence of the Chinese NEV battery recycling industry on government policy. However, MU has a strong impact on SF. Moreover, the levels of SF should be reasonable, otherwise it could be a burden to enterprises. There also exists the bidirectional dynamic relationships between FG and INNO. This study contributes a non-core perspective to strategic flexibility research by revealing the complex environmental mechanism, and to the Chinese NEV battery recycling industry we provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for government and firms on how to apply SF to promote innovation and realize growth in the present business environment.

With the rapid development of e-commerce and the impact of COVID-19, online takeout has become the first choice of more and more consumers. Previous research has indicated that food packaging is of great significance to marketing performance, yet very little is known about the mechanisms through which food packaging pollution risk affects online takeout consumption. This study proposes an expanded model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by incorporating the Concept of Perceived Risk (CPR) to analyze the mechanism of consumers’ packaging pollution risk perception (PPRP) on their purchasing intention toward online takeout. Online survey was performed to collect data from 336 valid respondents in China, which was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The research findings verify the effectiveness of the TPB in the context of Chinese online takeout. Notably, the PPRP of online takeout was found to have a significant negative impact on consumers’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (PBC). It was also confirmed that consumers’ attitudes, subjective norms, and PBC regarding online takeout partially mediate the negative relationship between PPRP and purchase intention. In addition, the findings corroborate the granular nuances among three groups concerning consumers’ education level. The results do not only provide suggestions to the online takeout industry but also contribute theoretical value and practical significance for the improvement of sustainable food consumption.
