Well-defined ABA- and BAB-type block copolymers of PDMAEMA and PCL

Abstract: Triblock copolymers of ABAand BAB-type consisting of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA, A) and poly(3-caprolactone) (PCL, B) have successfully been prepared. PDMAEMA-b-PCL-b-PDMAEMA (ABA) and PCL-b-PDMAEMA-b-PCL (BAB) were synthesised by a combination of ringopening polymerisation of 3-CL, atom transfer radical polymerisation of DMAEMA and end-group conversion, performed through either acylation or azide-alkyne "click" chemistry. All samples were analysed by size exclusion chromatography where… Show more

“…The molecular weights attained from the DMSO‐SEC after polymerization of the PDMAEMA block should therefore be viewed with caution for all the polymers. The block copolymers showed a thermoresponsive behavior in DMF at the running temperature of the DMF‐SEC, as previously reported by our group, and were therefore not evaluated by this method.…”

“…Previously in our group, we have shown examples of cellulose modification using PISA-inspired latex systems, comprising a cationic poly(2-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) PDMAEMA-based corona. 21,22 Despite the interesting adsorption properties of PDMAEMA, [46][47][48][49] one of the observed challenges is the hydrolysis of the monomer in aqueous media, even at neutral pH, resulting in methacrylic acid-residues along the polymer backbone. 22 Anionic residues in the backbone give rise to lower cationic charge, thus resulting in lower adsorption to anionic surfaces.…”

“…13 As adsorbing blocks, protonated tertiary amines are commonly utilized as they adsorb readily onto the negatively charged cellulose due to electrostatic interactions and entropy gain. 12,[16][17][18][19] One structure explored in several reports in the literature is poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA). DMAEMA can be polymerized by reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) techniques, such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) 13,16,17 and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, [20][21][22][23] resulting in PDMAEMA chains with controlled molar masses and low dispersity.…”
