Well-Clear Recommendation for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Based on Unmitigated Collision Risk

Abstract: Unmanned aircraft systems must demonstrate a capability to sense and avoid air traffic as part of a layered conflict management system to enable safe operations in the National Airspace System. During operations, an unmanned aircraft system should attempt to remain "well clear" to minimize the need for a collision avoidance action. Previously, a well-clear definition was adopted for large unmanned aircraft systems; however, this definition is not appropriate for small unmanned aircraft system weighing less tha… Show more

“…In average, the described scheme allows to get position updates every 95 ms when the drones are separated by 100 m distance. This is enough even for collision avoidance purposes (it corresponds to 0.95 m of traveled distance for 10 m/s -an average cruise speed of rotary UAVs reported in [9]). The delay between updates grows as the inter-UAV distance increases (see Figure 8) due to the channel influence.…”

“…If the drones are 1 km apart, they are going to collide within 50 s. This means that in less than one minute the two UAVs have to detect each other, and perform a manoeuvre to avoid the crash. A more rigorous study of the safety separation distance between drones is given in [13]: the authors explicitly compute wellclear distance recommendations for different kind of drones, how to assess the risk of collision and prove their claims with simulation results.…”

“…The most important problem is collision avoidance [26]. In [27], the safety of clear definitions of UAV group control was evaluated in an analytical way that is characteristic of the dynamics and concept of operations. Data was collected and processed, including for operations with low altitudes.…”
