Weights and importance in composite indicators: Closing the gap

Abstract: HighlightsComposite indicators are widely used in sustainable development and elsewhere. The effect of weights used in aggregating indicators is complex.Three tools are presented which help developers and users to investigate effects of weights.Case studies related to sustainable development demonstrate the benefits.

“…Both domains are multidimensional; and both domains can be viewed as subdimensions of even broader domains of home life. Even when complex constructs such as these are logical and there is a history of measuring them, it can be difficult to define their boundaries with precision (Becker, Saisana, Paruolo, & Vandecasteele, 2017). The two home constructs examined in this study are complex.…”

“…The two home constructs examined in this study are complex. Even when complex constructs such as these are logical and there is a history of measuring them, it can be difficult to define their boundaries with precision (Becker, Saisana, Paruolo, & Vandecasteele, 2017). As it happens, the same action on the part of a parent could reflect any number of subdimensions of home life or a higher-order dimension.…”

“…The first of them is Pena's method (Somarriba and Pena, 2009) and the second is the one proposed by Becker et al (2017). Pena's method sequentially finds the explanatory power (R 2 ) of each leading indicator variable net of the other trailing indicator variables and assigns weights to the indicator variables accordingly.…”
