Weight of the Evidence is the Right Approach

Abstract: Sampling and field experiments were conducted from 1975 to 1990 to test how the structure of marine benthic communities around McMurdo Station, Antarctica varied with levels of anthropogenic contaminants in marine sediments. The structure of communities (e.g., infauna density, species composition, and life history characteristics) in contaminated and uncontaminated areas were compared with the structure of communities influenced by two large‐scale natural disturbances, anchor ice formation and uplift or iceber… Show more

“…Because high latitude species are distributed at the extremity of the ocean thermal continuum and are bounded southward by the Antarctic continent, SO species will not have the opportunity to migrate and maintain under constant environmental conditions. In addition, Antarctic marine ecosystems are facing direct anthropogenic disturbances linked to fisheries, tourism, cruiseships, and scientific activities (sewage pollution from research stations and ships, experiment pollution and lost or unrecovered equipment; Aronson, Thatje, McClintock, & Hughes, 2011;Lenihan & Oliver, 1995).…”

“…Among the first species to colonize disturbed environments, this opportunistic species has been observed naturally in environments with varying degrees of physical disturbance, organic enrichment, and chemical pollution (Lenihan and Oliver, 1995; Conlan et al, 2004). The broad distribution and high local abundances of this species in a variety of benthic environments in the Southern Ocean suggest that S. tcherniai has a high capacity for acclimating to diverse polar habitats.…”

“…Human impacts at McMurdo Station have been monitored by the United States Antarctic Program for many years [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. The scale of McMurdo Station in terms of the area of ice-free ground, the buildings, roads, and storage areas occupies a significant percentage of the land in the area.…”
