Weed Control Strips Influences on the Rubber Tree Growth

Abstract: Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) is the most widely cultivated tree species for producing natural rubber latex whose productivity can be reduced by weeds. Field experiment was carried out during two years to evaluate the growth of rubber tree plants submitted to different weed control strips (0-weed-free, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400-(weedy cm) and to determine the critical width of weed control strip during the establishment of rubber tree plantation. Weed community was composed mainly by Urochlo… Show more

“…During this period, it is recommended that the soil and the aerial part of the rubber trees be free of any weeds at least one meter on each side of the planting line, during the first two years. (Guzzo, et al, 2014). This care will avoid competition and allow satisfactory growth and development of rubber trees, suggesting that manual and/or chemical management be carried out in the planting lines and that the weeds preserved between the lines be managed with the use of brush cutters, keeping the weeds cleared as a protector of the soil.…”

“…Por esse motivo, as plantas devem ser sempre mantidas no limpo, especialmente na implantação e durante o primeiro ano. Nesse período, recomenda-se que o solo e a parte aérea das seringueiras estejam livres de quaisquer plantas infestantes a pelo menos um metro de cada lado da linha de plantio, durante os dois primeiros anos (Guzzo, et al, 2014).…”

“…Scientifically, the best practices in taking care of the tree involve disbudding, pruning and replacement of missing ones. All these involve checking of the plant height (yardstick) and it also helps to monitor weed and other biological interference with the rubber tree (Guzzo et al, 2014). There are also evidences that the rubber trees strive more with plenty of water but with good irrigation for "subsurface flow and underground water table dynamics" (Claramonte et al, 2010).…”
