In this study, based on the analysis of the dynamic nature of collaborative design process, a new framework of collaborative design for modelling an immersive VR automotive driving learning (imseADL) platform is described. This framework adopts an agent-based approach and relocates designers, system and the supporting agents in a unified knowledge representation scheme for imseADL design. This study presents the research issues and industrial requirements for such a system. Furthermore, a prototype system of the proposed framework is implemented and its feasibility is evaluated using a real design scenario whose objective is designing an imseADL.In this system, each virtual element or assembly is designed as an independent unit. The unit agent method is used as the basic system modules. To manage these unit agents, a web-based interface manager is provided. The scene explorer is a virtual element design space based on unit agents and the interface manager. To manage the collaborative session, a web-based design phase manager is proposed. In this situation, designers do not possess all the knowledge they need but instead rely on other organisations. In addition, this proposed system is an effective and valuable architecture for collaboration design in today's product development environment.

This paper presents a case study on the collaboration between a set of distributed web applications developed and deployed for carrying out a 'Design for Assembly' analysis. The case study is conducted using a web-based prototype system called CyberCO. The system is based on a theoretical framework which has been formed through an innovative combination of a number of concepts such as agents and workflows. Unlike previous attempts in computer supported concurrent engineering systems, collaboration in this framework between distributed web applications is achieved through workflows between their representative agents. The flows of data between agents are guided by the associated constraints. The flows of controls are somewhat data-driven in the sense that agents start and stop themselves whenever the predefined conditions are satisfied. The data-driven flows of controls are different from those widely used in workflow management where flows of controls are determined by the precedence relationships. The key purpose of this case study demonstration is to extend our knowledge and insights into this emerging field where increasing number of web applications are developed and deployed for collaborative product development and realization projects.

ABSTRACT:A fully spatial immersive and interactive visualizations system that provides extremely vivid stereoscopic views of sceneries in 3D is developed based on the technologies of CAD, database, distributed virtual reality and computing networking. The platform, immersive VR automotive driving learning (imseADL), is developed in a web-based collaborative design environment at the YTIT for teaching and research. The platform will can also be tools for complex system analysis and design, such as collision, stability for driving, safety, etc., in the future. In addition, the computer generated images (objects and scenes) can be tailored made to produce any simulated environment for training and skill evaluation purposes within a short period of time. In this paper, based on the analysis of the dynamic nature of collaborative design process, a new framework of collaborative design for modeling an imseADL is described. This framework adopts an agent-based approach and relocates designers, system and the supporting agents in a unified knowledge representation scheme for imseADL design. A prototype system of the proposed framework is implemented and its feasibility is evaluated using a real design scenario whose objective is designing an imseADL. Meanwhile, the imseADL will also provide a means for learners to study their operations without the need to physically visiting these facilities. More importantly, experiments can be performed on the virtual scenes whereby operation and design parameters can be changed in a safe and controlled situation.
