Web‐based Assessment and Test Analyses (WATA) system: development and evaluation

Abstract: This study introduces the development of a Web-based assessment system, the Web-based Assessment and Test Analyses (WATA) system, and examines its impacts on teacher education. The WATA system is a follow-on system, which applies the Triple-A Model (assembling, administering, and appraising). Its functions include (1) an engine for teachers to administer and manage testing, (2) an engine for students to apply tests, and (3) an engine for generating test results and analyses for teachers. Two studies were under… Show more

“…An assessment system should apply the Triple-A Model [33] as the baseline qualification in order to provide the most comprehensive form of test and to be more suitable for teacher education. In Figure 1, we can see the Triple-A model architecture that we have used in our system and that consists of three main functions:…”

“…In others words, digital assessment can play the role of a teaching and learning strategy, which enables learners to engage in self-regulated learning behavior during the learning process. Wang (2010Wang ( , 2011a proposed "assessment as teaching and learning strategy (ATLS)" and applied the graduated prompt approach proposed by Brown (1985, 1987) to develop a Web-based dynamic assessment system, "Graduated Prompting Assessment Module of the WATA system (GPAM-WATA)," based on the framework of Web-based Assessment and Test Analysis system (WATA system) (Wang et al 2004;Wang et al 2008). Wang (2010Wang ( , 2011a transformed the contents of science instruction into instructional items, which are the test items in dynamic assessment.…”

“…Even for experienced teachers, it is very timeconsuming to complete such a monitoring process [2,3,5]. Several studies have demonstrated that teachers, due to either a lack of administrative support or time constraints, are unable to assess student literacy effectively [11,12]. English language teachers rarely have enough time to properly teach reading comprehension, forcing students to rely predominantly on their own hunches and perceptions when attempting to understand the structure and concepts of instructional reading material.…”
