We and our pets: Allergic together?

Abstract: The study of allergies in creatures living together without being relatives can help us understand the impact of environmental influences. We tested the association of allergies in humans and their pets. A nested unmatched case-control study was performed in a random sample of 4261 inhabitants, aged 25-74 years, of the City of Augsburg, Germany and two adjacent counties. Using standardised computer-assisted face-to-face interviews, we determined and compared the prevalence of doctor-diagnosed atopic diseases (… Show more

“…Mammalian lipocalin allergens closely resemble endogenous human lipocalin proteins, such as Lipocalin-2, LCN2 ( 11 , 157 ), a natural acute phase defense proteins that binds environmental iron and can deliver this iron directly and a receptor-mediated to immune cells ( 157 , 162 ). They are usually excreted and thus are found in the dander, urine, fur, and saliva of animals ( 356 ). LCN2 is involved in numerous iron-dependent processes of the innate immune arm and is also critical to renal development.…”

“…108 Lipocalins are usually secreted and can be found in the dander, urine, fur, and saliva of animals. 109 They have been described as powerful bacteriostatic agents against various microorganisms, by impeding their iron sequestration and binding to siderophore-iron complexes, 110,111 but in accordance with their ligand binding plasticity, lipocalins also seem to act as carriers for lipids and hormones.…”

“…Our research group has recently developed an experimental model of feline asthma using aerosolized Bermuda grass allergen (BGA) [28], an aeroallergen common to both human and feline asthmatics [29]. This model replicates the functional, clinical, immunologic, and histopathological features of spontaneously occurring asthma.…”
