An accurate analysis of the relationship between humans and the land in oasis areas is essential for the formulation of policies for differentiated oasis urban development and resource management measures. Therefore, researchers have conducted numerous studies based on the linear relationship between “people and land” in oasis areas. To address this gap, this paper takes the Wuwei oasis as an example and re-examines the impact of human activities on the sustainability of natural capital from a new research perspective (nonlinear perspective). The study selected four variables, namely planted forests, scientific R&D investment, urbanization, and population density, as the main human activities affecting the Wuwei oasis area. The NARDL model, the nonlinear Granger causality test, is employed to investigate the interactions between the variables and the oasis natural capital in both the short and long term. The results indicate the following: (1) During the study period, the consumption of natural capital in the Wuwei oasis has been increasing annually and has long exceeded the local ecological carrying capacity. (2) In the short term, planting forests is the most beneficial human activity. The most beneficial human activity is the planting of trees, while in the long term, scientific R&D investment has the most positive effect on enhancing the oasis’ resource reserves. (3) Urbanization, population density, and planted forest land all have a direct effect on the sustainable development of natural resources in the oasis. The findings of the study indicate that the application of scientific and technological innovation to promote the sustainable development of resources and the environment is a more reliable approach for oasis cities with a high degree of industrialization.

Improving production efficiency can help overcome the constraints of resource scarcity and fragile environments in oasis agriculture. However, there are few studies about the effect of farmers’ cognition of resources and the environment on their production efficiency. Taking farmers in the Ganzhou District of Zhangye—a typical representative of oasis agriculture in an inland river basin in Northwest China—this study empirically analyzed the effect of farmers’ cognition of resources and the environment on agricultural production efficiency. The average agricultural productivity of the surveyed farmers is 0.64, which is much lower than the average level in China. Farmers’ cognition of resources and the environment is related to green production willingness and behavior. Green production willingness, green production behavior between cognition of resources and the environment, and agricultural production efficiency play a chain mediating role, showing that farmers’ cognition of resources and the environment indirectly affects production efficiency. Green planting willingness is formed based on cognition of resources and the environment; when farmers translate willingness into behavior, it will further improve agricultural production efficiency. Recommendations are made based on the findings, such as strengthening the cognition of resources and the environment, mobilizing enthusiasm for green production, and promoting the practice of green planting.

The Effect of Uncertainty of Risks on Farmers’ Contractual Choice Behavior for Agricultural Productive Services: An Empirical Analysis from the Black Soil in Northeast China

Regulating farmers’ choice of agricultural production service (APS) contracts can help maintain the stability of transactions, enhance agricultural production efficiency, protect farmers’ rights and welfare, stimulate the healthy and sustainable development of service organizations, and promote the economic benefits of agriculture. Under the uncertainty of risk (RU), farmers’ willingness to sign a regulated service contract after purchasing APS is a key factor in reaching an efficient and high-quality partnership. Based on the survey data of the black soil area in northeastern China, this study uses the Heckman two-stage model and analyzes it under the logical framework of APS purchases and contractual choice behavior (CCB) under the role of RU. The main findings are as follows. First, the RU has a significant “inducing” effect on farmers’ CCB, and the higher the RU, the more farmers tend to make formal written contracts; among them, each unit increase in business risk increases farmers’ choice of written contracts by 0.797 units, which is an important factor affecting CCB. Second, farmers’ personal trust level played a positive moderating role in influencing CCB. Compared to the low trust level group, farmers in the high trust level group had a diminished degree of influence on CCB, but the intensity was relatively weak. Third, farmers’ personal, family, and social characteristics all influence their behavioral decision-making processes. In order to reduce the risk level of cooperation between farmers and service providers, which can promote the standardization of cooperation contracts, this study suggests that the government should use the publication of manuals and other forms to carry out legal literacy, promote labor market information transparency, reduce service risks, and enhance the effectiveness of the linkage between farmers and service providers.
