Wavelet-Based Multifractal Analysis on Climatic Regime Shifts

Abstract: A climatic regime shift is characterized by an abrupt transition from one quasi-steady climatic state to another. We attempted to explain the change of multifractal behavior of climate indices when a regime shift occurred. We used the wavelet -transform method to analyze the multifractal behaviors of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index (Niño3.4 index), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index, North Pacific Index (NPI), Pacific/North American pattern (PNA) index, and West Pacific pattern (WP) index. W… Show more

“…The wavelet transform allows reliable multifractal analysis to be performed [2]. In our previous paper [3], in terms of the multifractal analysis, we conclude that a climatic regime shift corresponds to a change from multifractality to monofractality of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index.…”

“…The τ(−6) of the AMO and PDO increased and the fractality of AMO and PDO became monofractal at 1976 and the AMO and PDO became stable. For 1976, the fractality of AMO, PDO, and Niño3.4 changed from multifractality to monofractality, which is shown in the climate regime shift (Maruyama & Morimoto, 2015) and the global temperature increased. When the state changes, the fractality also changes to exhibit mono-Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection fractality and stability.…”
