Wavelength beam combining of ytterbium fiber lasers

Abstract: Wavelength beam combining of five ytterbium fiber lasers is demonstrated in a master-oscillator power-amplifier configuration at combined powers up to 6 W. The combined beam profile has an M2 value of 1.14, which is equal to that of an individual fiber. Beam steering in one dimension over 140 resolvable spots is also demonstrated.

“…In the effort to achieve higher and higher laser output power and good quality beam, the coherent combination of solid-state lasers, or fiber lasers or fiber amplifiers have been demonstrated by several techniques [7][8][9][10][11]. Traditional diffraction-limited solidstate lasers run into serious thermal management problems with average power about a few hundred watts [7,8].…”

“…Combination of light beams often appears in optical systems. Combination or coherent combination of laser beams and phase locking of a lase array are interesting problems [7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…High power laser sources with high beam quality have been demonstrated by using complex coherent and spectral beam-combining techniques in external cavities [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]. In addition, incoherent beam-combining method [36,37] has been used to scale up the optical power by combining individual laser elements as well.…”
