Waterborne coatings based on acrylic latex containing nanostructured ZnO as an active additive

Abstract: This work was devoted to the study of the properties of an acrylate latex-based binder synthesised by semi-continuous emulsion polymerisation. Nanoparticles of zinc oxide (NPsZnO) in an amount of 1.5 wt.% with respect to the polymer content were added to the binder during the synthesis procedure. The binder was then homogenised with various anticorrosion pigments, fillers and additives to obtain model anticorrosion paints. In addition, model paints with expected enhanced antimicrobial resistance designed for t… Show more

“…Dankova has prepared two latex binders of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPsZno) by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization method using different concentration of acrylic monomers (MMA, BA, diacetone acrylamide DAAM) with crosslinker as adipic acid dihydrazide and APS as initiator. They studied the properties of new nanoparticle of zinc oxide (NPsZno), self-crossing latexes as a paint binder which improved resistivity, tensile strength, hardness, anticorrosion, antimicrobial, compatibility with compared to existed latex [106][107] .…”

“…As ZnO has a limited water solubility, it neutralizes (ionizes) carboxylated latexes in the wet state and cures them upon drying. Recently, nanosized ZnO has been presented in the connection with ionic crosslinking of latex coatings leading to a pronounced improvement of coating protective properties, such as water and solvent resistance, anticorrosion protection and mechanical resistance [20][21][22]. Nanostructured ZnO has also met with considerable enthusiasm in the field of latex coatings due to the introduction of UV-shielding and antibacterial properties [23][24][25].…”

“…AMCs are generally applied in textiles, 40–42 paints, 43 healthcare institutions, 44,45 water treatment, 41 food packaging 46–48 and so on. We find bacterial growth on surfaces connected to our everyday life like health‐care institutions, household sector, commercial offices, food industry facilities, and other buildings and outdoor surfaces such as railings, facades, boat and ship bottoms against molds 34,40,41,43,44,46,49 . To overcome these issues, antimicrobial paints are developed which prevent the biofilm formation by reducing spread of infections and henceforth making them demand full 50 …”

“…A promising development is the replacement of solvent‐based paints with water‐based (latex) paints 53 . Water based paints are generally considered as good filling binders and are mostly used in the preparation of paints 49 . Paints can also be differentiated based on the kind of binder used which can be inorganic such as sol silicate paints (with colloidal silica) or silicate paints (with sodium or potassium silicate) and organic like natural latexes or synthetic polymers such as alkyd, acrylic, poly (vinyl acetate), and so on 51,52 .…”
