The experiment was conducted at the research field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during two consecutive rabi seasons of 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 to find out the effect of hydropriming on the performance of maize seeds under variable soil moisture regimes. The treatments of the experiment were two priming methods viz., i) Hydropriming, ii) Non-priming and four moisture regimes viz., i) Wet condition, ii) Field capacity, iii) 75% of field capacity, and iv) 50% of field capacity. Results showed that yield and yield contributing characters (plant population/m 2 , number of cobs/m 2 , length of cob, diameter of cob, 100-grain weight) were influenced significantly by hydropriming. Yield and yield contributing characters were highest when hydroprimed seeds were sown at field capacity whereas it was the lowest at 75% of field capacity from non-primed seeds. Days to tasseling, days to silking, and days to maturity were reduced when hydroprimed seeds were sown at field capacity. At 50% of field capacity, no germination was occurred.

Microorganisms isolated from stressed ecosystem may prove as ideal candidates for development of bio-inoculants for stressed agricultural production systems. In the present study, moisture stress tolerant rhizobacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of sorghum, pigeonpea, and cowpea grown under semiarid conditions in India. Four isolates KB122, KB129, KB133, and KB142 from sorghum rhizosphere exhibited plant growth promoting traits and tolerance to salinity, high temperature, and moisture stress. These isolates were identified as Bacillus spp. by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The strains were evaluated for growth promotion of sorghum seedlings under two different moisture stress conditions (set-I, continuous 50% soil water holding capacity (WHC) throughout the experiment and set-II, 75% soil WHC for 27 days followed by no irrigation for 5 days) under greenhouse conditions. Plate count and scanning electron microscope studies indicated successful root surface colonization by inoculated bacteria. Plants inoculated with Bacillus spp. strains showed better growth in terms of shoot length and root biomass with dark greenish leaves due to high chlorophyll content while un-inoculated plants showed rolling of the leaves, stunted appearance, and wilting under both stress conditions. Inoculation also improved leaf relative water content and soil moisture content. However, variation in proline and sugar content in the different treatments under two stress conditions indicated differential effect of microbial treatments on plant physiological parameters under stress conditions.

In field conditions the plants are most commonly subjected to simultaneous effects of multiple stresses. The mechanisms of plant tolerance to salinity and drought are physiologically connected and overlapping, but some aspects of physiology and metabolism may differ when in the experiment salt and water stress is used separately or both stresses are used simultaneously. Physiological and biochemical reactions of the plants under combined effect of the drought and salinity are unique, which cannot be directly extrapolated from respective responses to each of these stresses individually. Drought and salinity reduce individually the availability of water for plants. However, the presence of salt in the soil inhibits the rate of the development of drought, enabling the plant to survive in unfavorable period of short-term drought without violation of basic physiological functions. At increased NaCl concentration in the soil during the combined stress, basic physiological and biochemical functions of the plants remain constant until a critical threshold, after which the plants' productivity decreases dramatically. This article shows the features of the combined stress and its difference from the drought and salinity individually.
