The kinetics of the palladiumcatalyzed biphasic telomerization of butadiene and ammonia by means of in situ catalysts consisting of phosphane palladium complexes were investigated at 80 8C. The effects of ligand, catalyst, and ammonia concentrations were studied. The rate of product formation as well as the regioselectivity of the reaction was found to depend greatly on ligand and catalyst concentration. A model for the reaction mechanism was deduced from these results, explaining the regioselectivities obtained. The regioselectivity could be strongly influenced by the ligand. We synthesized new water-soluble phosphanes with special p-acceptor/s-donor properties for use in the telomerization reaction. TPPTS as a ligand gave the terminal octadienylamine with a regioselectivity of 50 %, whilst a TPPTS derivative with three methoxy groups in ortho positions led to a regioselectivity of 94 %. This corroborated the importance of ligand properties in this reaction.

The insoluble fraction obtained from the hydrolysis and condensation of (4‐dimethylamino‐, 2‐methyl‐, and nonsubstituted)phenyltrimethoxysilanes in the presence of benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide in benzene was characterized. IR, 1H NMR, and 29Si NMR suggested that the insoluble fraction was composed of RSi(O)3, that is, a T3 structure. X‐ray diffraction indicated the presence of a long‐range ordered structure composed of a mixture of crystals. Raman spectroscopy strongly suggested a cage structure by the presence of a ring‐opening vibration assignable to a cubic structure at 475–482 cm−1. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthetic approaches to both linear and cyclic cyano-substituted phosphines (P~CN-phosphines) found an industrial application as catalyst precursors, pesticides, herbicides, flame retardants, precursors of aminophosphines etc., are reported. The main synthetic routes include reduction of P=O containing precursors, alkylation of silylphosphines and metal phosphides by halogenoalkyl(aryl)carbonitriles, phosphorylation of the latter ones, decomposition of phosphonium salts and hydrophosphination of cyano-substituted olefins proceeding under non-catalytical conditions and with use of metal complex catalysis. Merits and demerits of each approach are discussed. Phosphines bearing cyano function as an additional coordination site show diverse coordination behavior depending on the phosphine structure and nature of the metal. Four main types of complexes are observed, namely those with P-monodentate coordination, with N-monodentate coordination and complexes where bidentate coordination mode of P and N atoms is realized either at the single metal atom or of bridged type between two different metal atoms. Thus coordination behavior of such P~CN-ligands relative to transition and non-transition metals, structure features of the complexes obtained and their application in catalytic processes are discussed.

Abstract: The phosphine P(CH20H)3 forms water soluble complexes of the type [M{P(CH20H)3}4] (M = Pt, Pd, or Ni) which are catalysts for the addition of PH3 t o CH20 and the Pt complex is readily protonated by water; the crystal structure of the Pd complex is also described.
