Water Soluble Polymers as a Means to Increase Flow Capacity: Field Experiment of Drag Reduction by Polymer Additives in an Irrigation Canal

Abstract: A drag reduction method by polymer additives was tested for the first time in a large scale open-channel watercourse. Ten and a half tons of a water soluble polymer were injected during 15 consecutive hours in the upstream section of an irrigation canal in steady state, leading to a 20 ppm concentration of polymer in the water. The evolution of the water depth was measured every 10 min for 18 h along ten sections further downstream, up to a distance of 26.3 km from the injection section. The water depth at all… Show more

“…Other studies do not report strong evidence of acrylamide reformation during polymer degradation [ 166 , 168 ]. This is mainly explained by the fast deamination mechanisms, evidence of enzymes cleaving macromolecules randomly and statistically more occurrence of having a chain scission within the polymer chain rather than at the end units.…”

“…The normal distribution or the normal curve is also called the distribution in the calculation of plan rainfall according to the normal distribution method, having the following equation: The KT frequency factor value is generally available in the table, called the variable reduced gauss table value, to simplify the calculation, as shown in the table in the appendix [6,7,8].…”

“…The outlet, or pour point, is the point on the surface at which water flows out of an area. It is the lowest point along the boundary of a watershed [8,9,10].…”

“…Drag reduction (DR) by polymers has been of great interest, mainly due to its vast applications, including firefighting, transport of liquids in pipelines, agriculture, and medicine. There are some good reviews of the recent progress in understanding the fundamentals of polymer DR, such as one review of mechanical degradation and deaggregation of drag-reducing polymers in turbulent flows and the other on the mechanics and prediction of turbulent DR with polymer additives . The turbulence DR performance of polymers could be influenced by many factors such as time, turbulence intensity, molecular weight of the polymer, chemical structure of the polymer, etc …”
