Water quality in the Appalachian Valley and Ridge, the Blue Ridge, and the Piedmont Physiographic Provinces, eastern United States

Abstract: The RASA Program represents a systematic effort to study a number of the Nation's most important aquifer systems, which, in aggregate, underlie much of the country and which represent an important component of the Nation's total water supply. In general, the boundaries of these studies are identified by the hydrologic extent of each system and, accordingly, transcend the political subdivisions to which investigations have often arbitrarily been limited in the past. The broad objective for each study is to asse… Show more

“…Regional groundwater quality of the Valley and Ridge was described by Briel (1997) as part of the USGS Regional Aquifer-System Analysis study, which resulted in the analysis of major ions and nutrients in 3,012 wells and 428 springs. Water quality also was evaluated in regional studies presented in a series of hydrologic atlases of the United States (Miller, 1990;Lloyd and Lyke, 1995;Trapp and Horn, 1997) and was summarized by state in the USGS National Water Summaries (U.S. Geological Survey, 1985Survey, , 1988.…”

“…1). Land characteristics, geology, hydrology, and water quality in the area are described in detail in Hollyday and Hileman (1996), Rutledge and Mesko (1996), Briel (1997), Trapp and Horn (1997), Swain and others (2004), and Lindsey and others (2006), and are summarized below.…”

“…Carpenter and Reid (1993) presented the results of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program in which ground-water samples from 5,778 wells in North Carolina were analyzed for uranium, vanadium, dysprosium, sodium, aluminum, manganese, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Briel (1997) summarized ground-water quality in North Carolina wells as part of the Appalachian Valleys-Piedmont Regional Aquifer System (APRASA) study.…”
