Introduction: Storage tanks for household water usage guarantees convenience and safety forconsumers in relation to water intermittency. Neglecting a minimal care for storage tanks can turnthem into a source of water unfit for consumption. Objective: Evaluate the physical, chemical, andmicrobiological quality of water in household tanks to highlight the need for individual actions toguarantee the quality of water consumed at home. Methods: Residents of 217 homes answereda questionnaire to gather information about the water storage tank conditions and maintenance.Chlorine dosing, pH and temperature measurements were performed in situ and metal analyseswere made using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The presence ofparasites was evaluated using the spontaneous sedimentation technique and presence of bacteriafrom the coliform groups (total and fecal) were made using the multiple-tube technique with thechromogenic substrate. Results: Results showed that 115 participants knew the correct storage tankmaintenance period and 109 participants did not perform the storage tank maintenance at therecommended frequency. Mean values of chlorine, pH, and temperature were 1.34 mg/L, 6.5, and25.4 ºC, respectively. Average concentrations of metals were below the maximum values allowed.Parasites and bacteria were not detected. Tests indicated the water samples were in accordancewith the potable water quality standards endorsed or recommended by the Brazilian legislation.Conclusion: Results did not show microbiological contamination in study samples. Nevertheless, it isnecessary to keep the population regularly informed about the importance to maintain storage watertanks clean. Currently, there is a growing concern with the development of individual actions aimedat human health and prevention of water-related diseases concerning its access and use. Therefore,we need health education programs to guide community participation into the promotion of a betterquality of life.

Although water availability depends both on qualitative and quantitative aspects, most studies focus only on one of these. Therefore, the goal here is to relate water quality and quantity with the construction of Load Duration Curves (LDC) and to estimate E. coli load patterns in different flow conditions, seasons, and positions of two sub-basins of the Doce watershed (Brazil): Piracicaba and Piranga. A novel methodology is proposed in which the Burr XII distribution is adjusted to the LDC to compare all observed loads to their respective Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), allowing the estimation of the relative difference (RD) between these. Higher values of RD were observed for low flows for the Piracicaba basin, more urbanized, where point sources of pollution are the primary concern, reaching up to 99% of needed load reduction. In the Piranga basin, more agricultural, there was a broader RD variation, from 9% to 97% load reduction needed, which is an evidence of point sources of pollution combined with non-point sources. The new methodology can be used to estimate the load reduction of any pollutant and can be used by environmental agencies to identify effective practices to minimize and control pollution in different locations of the basins.

Introdução: A segurança do abastecimento de água é de extrema importância para a saúde pública, principalmente para crianças que, em idade escolar, podem permanecer de 5 h a 8 h por dia nas escolas. A água pode conter uma variedade de contaminantes que, em níveis elevados, têm sido associados ao aumento de uma série de doenças em crianças.Objetivo: Avaliar durante 12 meses a qualidade das águas de poços utilizadas como soluções alternativas coletivas de abastecimento em dez escolas públicas do município de Itatiba (SP). Método: Foram coletadas amostras de água de poço, de reservatório e de bebedouro, totalizando 100 amostras, sendo analisados parâmetros químicos, físicos, organolépticos e microbiológicos previstos na Portaria de Consolidação n° 5, de 28 de setembro de 2017, anexo XX. Adicionalmente foi realizada uma pesquisa quanto à presença de matérias estranhas, incluindo os protozoários Cryptosporidium spp. e Giardia spp. Resultados: Três escolas exibiram resultados em acordo com a legislação. As demais apresentaram presença de microrganismos como bactérias (29,0% de coliforme total e 9,0% de Escherichia coli, no total de amostras analisadas) e protozoários (15,0%), além de resultados acima do valor máximo permitido (VMP) para cor aparente (8,0%), turbidez (11,0%), Fe (12,0%), Zn e Pb (5,0%). Conclusões: Os resultados em desacordo com a legislação interferem na qualidade das águas oferecidas nas escolas, estando associados à falta de investimento na infraestrutura dos poços e cloração da água, sendo observado um diferencial na escola que possui parceria com a empresa de tratamento de água do município. Esta parceria deve ser mantida e, se possível, expandida para as demais escolas.
