Background soils are frequently utilized as a surrogate to assess pollution levels and environmental risks of heavy metals in Chinese lakes. However, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the reliability and uncertainty of such assessments. Here, we determined heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in sediment cores from five rural lakes in North China to evaluate the reliability and uncertainty of the assessments using background soils by comparing them with assessments based on background sediments. Comparative studies reveal large uncertainties in the assessments using background soils. Among these metals, uncertainties for Hg and Cd are relatively large, whereas those for the other metals are minor. This discrepancy is due to the considerably higher natural variability of Hg and Cd in soils and sediments in comparison to the other metals. Generally, assessments utilizing background soils underestimate pollution levels and risks of Hg but overestimate those of Cd in these lakes. Despite limited human activities around the lakes, they still received a considerable influx of heavy metals via regional atmospheric transport. Assessments of the nine metals indicate moderate to considerable ecological risks in these lakes. The risks are contributed primarily (78–89%) by Hg and Cd. This study underscores the substantial uncertainties in assessing heavy metal pollution and risks using regional background soils and emphasizes the importance of controlling atmospheric emissions of Hg and Cd to mitigate pollution in rural and remote water bodies in China.

Estimating Thresholds of Natural Vegetation for the Protection of Water Quality in South African Catchments

Many of South Africa’s water quality problems are directly attributable to the negative impacts of anthropogenic land use transformations, including urban and agricultural expansion. To mitigate these impacts, the preservation of an adequate amount of natural vegetation within catchment areas is an important management strategy. However, it is unclear how much natural vegetation cover is required to provide adequate levels of protection, nor at which scale(s) this strategy would be most effective. Accordingly, regression analysis was used to model relationships between water quality (measured using Nemerow’s Pollution Index) and metrics of natural vegetation at multiple scales across a sample of sub-catchments located within South Africa’s Eastern and Western Cape provinces. With conspicuous outliers removed, the models were able to explain between 69 and 82% of variation in the sample. Moreover, a statistically significant, nonlinear, and inverse relationship was found between proportions of natural vegetation cover and pollution levels. This relationship was strongest when measured (1) across the whole catchment and (2) within a 200 m riparian buffer zone. The models further indicated that approximately 80 to 90% natural vegetation cover was necessary at these scales to maintain water quality at ecologically acceptable levels. Additional nonlinear thresholds estimated using breakpoint analysis suggested that if proportions of natural vegetation fall below 45% (across the whole catchment) and 60% (within a 200 m riparian buffer zone) a dramatic increase in pollution levels can be expected.

Eco-Engineering Technologies and Achievements of Projects for Reconstructing Landscape Water from Aquaculture Ponds in Shanghai

The post-evaluation of ecological redevelopment is a good way of describing its achievements. In this paper, eco-engineering techniques, including hydrodynamic circulation reconstruction, water purification treatment, and aquatic ecosystem restoration, along with plant harvesting management, have been applied to reconstruct landscape water from aquaculture ponds. Both sediments and water quality were sampled and tested for basic physicochemical parameters and heavy metals. The ecological redevelopment of landscape water reconstructed from aquaculture ponds was evaluated using the single and Nemero comprehensive pollution index methods. The results demonstrate that nutrients, including organic matter and organic nitrogen and their ratio to sediments, were confirmed to be in a state of moderate pollution, while the ecological risk of heavy metal pollution was relatively low. Although the concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were significantly higher than those of other indexes, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, all presented obvious downward trends over time, and a majority of the water samples exhibited mild-to-moderate pollution levels. In general, this study provides a set of reference values for redeveloping water ecosystems from aquaculture ponds using eco-engineering technologies.
