Water quality assessment and mapping using inverse distance weighted interpolation: a case of River Kaduna, Nigeria

Abstract: Several researchers have studied the water quality of the upper and lower stretches of River Kaduna with little on the middle stretch of the river. Besides, no work has ever been done on mapping the water quality of the said river. Hence, the middle stretch of River Kaduna was monitored for 12 months starting from June, 2016 to May, 2017, covering both rainy and dry seasons in 15 sampling locations to generate data for water quality mapping. However, eight water quality parameters were analyzed namely; tempera… Show more

“…As an extension found in numerous spatial analysis tools, IDW allows the interpolation of water quality parameters at an unknown location from known values to create a continuous surface, and understand the scenarios of water quality parameters in the study area 35 . Though there are several spatial modeling techniques including kriging available concerning the application in GIS, the IDW approach has been selected as it enables to process of the spatial distribution of water quality for a comprehensive analysis of the results.…”

“…The multivariate approaches for the matrix for water quality parameters offer a better understanding of the characteristics of water quality [34,[44][45][46]. Firstly, we assessed the temporal variation of water quality between the dry and wet seasons by using the Spearman correlation coefficient (Spearman R) and discriminant analysis (DA) techniques.…”

“…Salah al-Din Governorate is located in central Iraq, north of Baghdad, on 33 58 ′ 28.90"N and 43 53′24.60 E. It has an area of 24.363 km 2 and has a population of 1,559,000 people Fig.1. Topographically, it is a semi-flat area with the presence of some elevated local features represented by the deposits of river terraces and several depressions.…”

“…This will help in identifying sampling sites and areas with a high level of pollution along the river, which in turn will assist in pollution control. Water samples are not usually collected at every point along the river but at specific locations [2]. A change in the quantity and quality of water due to the effects of upstream damming has significantly reduced the water flow to Iraq.…”
